Red blood cell vitamin E concentrations in fetuses are related to but lower than those in mothers during gestation: a possible association with maternal lipoprotein (a) plasma levels
Article Abstract:
Vitamin E levels in the red blood cells of fetuses parallel those of their mothers at lower concentrations. Researchers, examined the blood lipoprotein (a) and vitamine E levels of 24 pregnant women and their fetuses. Earlier blood analysis indicated neonatal risks among all pregnancies, such as disease and growth retardation, and a likely deficiency of vitamin E. Fetal blood was taken from the umbilical cord. There was no relationship between maternal and fetal plasma contents with respect to vitamin E. However, there was a correlation in vitamin E levels between maternal red blood cells and fetal red blood cells. Maternal vitamin E levels were 1.5 milligrams per Liter while fetal values centered around a lower limit of 1.0 mg/L. The vitamin E concentrations of nine women with high lipoprotein (a) plasma levels correlated even more with those of their babies. In view of these findings, supplementation with vitamin E may provide an essential antioxidant substance to the majority of expectant mothers.

Relationship between graded degrees of anemia and amniotic fluid volume in the ovine fetus
Article Abstract:
Moderate to severe anemia in the fetus leads to an overproduction of amniotic fluid. The mechanism for this increased production is not clear but it could be caused by excess lactate produced via anaerobic metabolism during during periods of low oxygen.
