Normal nuchal thickness in the midtrimester indicates reduced risk of Down syndrome in pregnancies with abnormal triple-screen results
Article Abstract:
Ultrasound detection during the second trimester of a fetus with normally thick neck skin may indicate the fetus does not have Down syndrome, even if its mother tested positive for three blood tests used to detect Down syndrome. Thickened neck skin is a key characteristic of infants with Down syndrome. Researchers studied the fetuses of 646 women whose blood tested positive on three tests used to detect Down syndrome. The fetuses were examined using ultrasound between 14 and 21 weeks' gestation. Thirteen fetuses were found to have abnormally thick neck skin. Four of the 13 had Down syndrome, while the other nine had normal chromosome patterns. Eight other fetuses had Down syndrome, as detected by amniocentesis. The use of ultrasound to detect Down syndrome features may reduce the need for amniocentesis.

Embryoscopic demonstration of hemorrhagic lesions on the human embryo after placental trauma
Article Abstract:
Placental trauma early in pregnancy may cause demonstrable hemorrhagic lesions in the fetus. Embryoscopy was performed before and after chorionic villus sampling (CVS) in 65 women who chose to terminate their pregnancy. CVS is a procedure used in prenatal diagnosis that has generated considerable controversy because of its potential link with limb reduction birth defects. If no lesions were observed after CVS, the placenta was intentionally injured and observed again. Embryoscopy was successful on the first or second try in 54 of the women. Thirteen fetuses developed hemorrhagic lesions after CVS alone. Lesions were observed in another seven of 13 fetuses in whom the placenta was deliberately injured. Further research is needed on the consequences of these lesions.
