Fetal fibronectin detection in preterm labor: evaluation of a prototype bedside dipstick technique and cervical assessment
Article Abstract:
Dipstick testing for fetal fibronectin may not be accurate enough to be used alone to predict delivery in women with premature labor. Fetal fibronectin is a protein produced by the fetus that can be detected in the mother's cervical fluid. Researchers tested a bedside dipstick test for fetal fibronectin called the Fetal Fibronectin Membrane Immunoassay test. Vaginal swabs were taken from 121 women in premature labor and tested with the assay. The test was no more effective in predicting delivery than measurements of cervical dilation.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone, corticotropin-releasing hormone-binding protein, and activin A in maternal serum: prediction of preterm delivery and response to glucocorticoids in women with symptoms of preterm labor
Article Abstract:
Blood levels of corticotropin-releasing hormone, corticotropin-releasing hormone-binding protein, and activin A cannot be used to predict which pregnant women will go into labor prematurely. These proteins are not affected by corticosteroids given to pregnant women in premature labor to promote fetal lung maturity.

Cytokine abundance in placental tissues: evidence of inflammatory activation in gestational membranes with term and preterm parturition
Article Abstract:
Labor appears to involve an inflammatory process, according to a study of 61 pregnant women. Cytokine levels in some fetal tissues taken after delivery were much higher in women who went through labor compared to women who were delivered before they went into labor.
