Experts Debate Drugs for Healthy Women With Breast Cancer Risk
Article Abstract:
Tamoxifen and raloxifene may prevent breast cancer in healthy women at increased risk for the disease. Women with significant breast cancer risk factors, such as a strong family history of the disease, may benefit from preventive drug therapy. Tamoxifen has already been demonstrated to reduce the risk of the cancer in healthy women, and additional research will compare it with raloxifene. Some women at especially high risk for breast cancer have undergone mastectomy to remove the breast tissue at risk for developing cancer. Most of these women report satisfaction with the radical procedure.

Experts air new findings on lung diseases
Article Abstract:
Physicians heard the latest research on lung diseases at the 1998 meeting of the American Lung Association and American Thoracic Society. Sleep apnea appears to be linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases or perhaps the disease causes breathing problems. Lung volume reduction surgery appears to be beneficial in some emphysema patients. Exposure to cockroach allergens seems to increase the risk of asthma in many children. A study on the use of beta carotene and vitamin A was halted when the people taking the supplements were more likely to develop lung cancer.
