First impressions of the nurse and nursing care
Article Abstract:
Patients tend to form their opinions of the competence of nursing personnel based on first impressions, so uniforms are important. How nurses dress symbolizes role identity, authority, and their professional image. Dress also tells the patient how the nurse may influence the nurse-patient relationship. In a survey of the reactions to uniforms of patients in medical-surgical and obstetrical units the nurse with the pant uniform and stethoscope ranked the highest, while colored scrubs and street clothes with a lab coat received the lowest score. Findings indicate the need for nurses to have a professional image in a competitive health care setting.

Nurse call systems: impact on nursing performance
Article Abstract:
The nurse call systems at two large metropolitan hospitals were compared using participant observation and focus group techniques to measure system utilization and its impact upon the job performance of nursing staff. Results showed that using non-nursing staff to screen and direct patient calls saved nurses time, prevented frustration and enabled patient needs to be more swiftly met. The study also indicated that nurses spent a great deal of time trying to locate other staff. Focus group data showed this led to intense frustration. Nurses at both hospitals were dissatisfied with their call systems.
