First report of a vaginal foreign body perforating into the retroperitoneum
Article Abstract:
Physicians treating young girls with inflammation of the vulva and vagina may need to examine them to see if a foreign body inserted in the vagina is the cause. A 19-year-old woman with a history of abdominal pain, fever, and inflammation of the vulva and vagina went to an emergency department because of severe pain. A few years before, she had undergone surgery and hormone replacement therapy for infection and abdominal masses. Emergency room surgeons found a plastic spray bottle cap in the abdomen which had originally come through the vagina. She had told previous doctors that she had inserted the bottle cap in her vagina and it had not come back out, but no one believed her. Doctors could have examined her with ultrasound or under anesthesia and found the source of her pain.

A randomized, open, parallel-group study on the preventive effect of an estradiol-releasing vaginal ring (Estring) on recurrent urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women
Article Abstract:
A vaginal ring that releases estradiol appears to be effective in lowering the risk of urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women. The silicone ring is sold under the name Estring and is placed in the upper vagina, where it slowly releases estradiol, a natural form of estrogen. Researchers compared the use of Estring in 108 postmenopausal women, 53 of whom received Estring and 55 of whom received no treatment. Nine months later, 45% of the women who used Estring had not had a urinary tract infection, compared to 20% of those who did not use Estring.

An illuminated vaginal speculum
Article Abstract:
An illuminated vaginal speculum may be useful in examining women with vaginal prolapse. The vagina is supported by many ligaments, and when one of these connections breaks, the vagina sags. The traditional speculum used to examine the vagina cannot always detect these broken connections. One doctor attached the blade of a traditional speculum to a laryngoscope with a light at the top. This speculum could be more useful than the traditional one.
