Effect of one year residence in Antarctica on bone mineral metabolism and body composition
Article Abstract:
Bone mass and various biochemical parameters in seventeen young healthy men who lived in Antartica for one year were measured to assess the effect of a protracted Antartic stay on mineral metabolism. The study found that 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels declined in autumn and winter and returned to initial levels during the end of the stay. Parathormone and serum calcium diminished inexplicably at the beginning of the campaign. Bone mass in the volunteers increased despite the low vitamin D levels. This could be due to the volunteers' intense physical exertions.
