Florence revisited
Article Abstract:
Florence Nightingale showed a great interest in nursing from a young age despite a comfortable lifestyle in a wealthy English family. She took up her post as supervisor of nursing services for the Crimean War in 1854. She arrived to find dirty and impoverished conditions which promoted the spread of disease, and immediately established systems to improve hygiene. She constantly sought better government funding, and also used her own money to improve conditions. Her efforts reduced the death rate due to disease from 42% to 2% but her own health suffered. She later established a nurse training school in England.

Ladies at war
Article Abstract:
Over 20,000 female nursing staff and 15,000 auxiliaries were provided by the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) organisation during the First World War, enabling women to play an important role in caring for sick or injured soldiers. The VAD was established in 1909 to combat a shortage of medical staff dealing with front-line injuries. Many of the volunteers had no medical training, although they were will to overcome social prejudices to learn new skills, such as wound dressing and operating theatre techniques.

A berry Christmas
Article Abstract:
Mistletoe has been regarded throughout history as having supernatural powers, and since very early times has been used to treat a range of ailments. Modern medical research has shown that mistletoe is a tranquilliser, vasodilator and cardiac depressant. It is now used by herbalists in the treatment of hypertensive headaches, benign hypertension, nervous tension and tachycardia. Research is still being undertaken into the potential antitumour effect of iscador and other mistletoe extracts.
