FluNet as a Tool for Global Monitoring of Influenza on the Web
Article Abstract:
The World Health Organization (WHO) has created a World Wide Web site to allow its network of surveillance laboratories to enter data about influenza outbreaks. The network contains 110 national influenza centers in 83 countries. During 1997, information about 13,559 viral isolates was entered by 76 of the 114 national influenza centers and collaborating centers participating in a test of the system. Widespread outbreaks were reported in 21 countries. Four countries reported widespread outbreaks that lasted at least 4 weeks: the Russian Federation, Romania, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Update: Influenza Activity-Worldwide, April-September 1998
Article Abstract:
During October 1997-April 1998, most cases of influenza in the Northern Hemisphere were caused by influenza A(H3N2) viruses. However, influenza A(H1N1) viruses were associated with outbreaks in some countries, and influenza B viruses occurred in all regions at much lower levels.. Since April 1998, more cases of influenza associated with influenza A(H3N2) have been reported in the Southern Hemisphere. Most isolates of influenza A(H3N2), A(H1N2) and B were similar to the components of the 1998/1999 influenza vaccine.
