Fluid systems
Article Abstract:
When giving parenteral nutrition to infants and children it must be recognised that their nutritional needs are different from those of adults. A multidisciplinary team should assess the nutritional needs, taking into account the age and weight of the patient. Paediatric parenteral nutrition uses special solutions which include extra fluids, and amino acids which match those in breast milk. The mixture should be prepared in sterile conditions and infection rates monitored. Children who need parenteral nutrition for long periods may develop eating problems later on.

Planning on a PC
Article Abstract:
Royal Preston Hospital's Ward 14 is using an IBM desktop PC to produce care plans for patients in the mixed-sex orthopaedic trauma ward. Lancashire Polytechnic's principal lecturer in computer studies, David Nash, provided the hardware and developed the computer program. The system allows patient details to be entered when they are admitted to the ward and the resulting care plan is used by authorised staff to improve patient management, both in the hospital and by any subsequent care agency.
