Article Abstract:
Primary health workers should intervene in cases of substance abuse. Few alcohol and drug users would need specialist services if community health workers intervened in the initial stages. However, specialist training is required in prevention and coping strategies. Professionals should be competent to identify physical and psychological problems. They should have good inter-personal skills and be able to offer counselling and advice. They should also educate non-users in the dangers of substance abuse.

Six weeks after birth breast-feeding rates drop to 40%. Issues concerning how health workers can help women start and continue to breast-feed are presented.
