Focusing on solutions
Article Abstract:
Clients coming for therapy for psychiatric problems have the ability to find solutions to their problems themselves. Solutions therapy puts clients at ease, and makes their goals more realistic. This approach reduces the number of sessions required. Language is important in accepting and understanding that change is inevitable. Solution-oriented sessions can be split into goal setting, discussing the client's problem, general non-problem talk, discussing changes occurring within a patient's life before a session, considering philosophical exceptions, and setting tasks to perform.

Article Abstract:
A ward manager describes caring for an elderly patient with mental health problems. The patient, in an elderly care ward, was difficult and exhibited anti-social habits which left him with few friends. His unsuccessful attempts at living in the community are discussed. An attempt to boost his self esteem and restore his pride was made by engaging him in conversation on a regular basis, and encouraging him to help in caring for his fellow residents.
