Folate intake in Europe: Recommended, actual and desired intake
Article Abstract:
The B vitamin folate acts as a coenzyme in certain single carbon transfer reactions, synthesizing components of DNA, RNA and proteins. It can be used to treat the megaloblastic anaemia occurring during pregnancy or infancy. There is also evidence that supplements during the periconceptional period can reduce the risk of neural tube birth defects. However the scientific community and health authorities are concerned about the folate intake of the general population. Possible inconsistencies between the recommended, actual and desired folate intake were evaluated. It was concluded that the mean dietary folate intake in Europe is line with recommendations, but only a small part of the population reaches the desired dietary intake of greater than 350 mug/d.

Prediction of resting energy needs in older men with heart failure
Article Abstract:
Heart failure is a major clinical problem in the general population. Patients with congestive heart failure may often be undernourished. A new equation has been developed to predict resting energy needs in heart failure patients taking into account easily measured clinical variables and symptom severity. Indirect calorimetry was used to measuring resting metabolic rate, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure fat-free mass and fat mass and a treadmill test was used to measure peak VOsub2.

Within- and between-person variation of nutrient intakes of older people in Korea
Article Abstract:
Dietary studies of elderly people in Korea have become more popular, and an understanding of within- and between-person variations in nutrient intake is required when choosing a suitable method to assess diet. These variations were examined to assess the precision of estimates of intakes by calculating group size required for a single dietary interview. The study indicates that within and between person variations alter with gender.
