Follow-up care after an attempted suicide
Article Abstract:
A patient who had attempted suicide by shooting received a lot of support from a community psychiatric nurse, both during his stay in hospital and afterwards. The nurse received clinical support, as working with the suicidal can be highly stressful. The patient, a farmer who had lost his wife and had financial problems, also had to learn to cope with the results of his attempted suicide, facial injury. The nurse helped him to find solutions to his practical problems, and was able to reduce her visits when relatives and friends proved more compassionate than anticipated.

What's in a name? Perhaps the saftey of a child
Article Abstract:
UK nurses are being asked to take on more responsibility when child abuse is suspected, yet they are not receiving the back up to undertake such sensitive work, according the Royal College of Nursing. Many nursing staff are not being equiped with the right knowledge about who to turn to when presented with a case of child abuse, and often designated nurses are asked to undertake duties which take them away from child abuse work. The Department of Health has drafted a consultation document, which will review the role nurses play in protecting children.
