Equipped to care
Article Abstract:
The manager of an orthopaedic ward at Grimsby District General Hospital won a Pressure Sore Prevention competition for her report that highlighted the need for staff to be more aware of the causes of pressure sores and to make the best use of the equipment they have. The manager is part of a multidisciplinary team looking into the prevention of bedsores and she has designed a strategy for identifying chairs, mattresses and other products which aggravate sores. Other competition entries are described.

The history and use of the Waterlow card
Article Abstract:
The Waterlow pressure sore risk assessment system identifies three categories of relative pressure sore risk. Suggested courses of action for nurses are presented in each category. The assessment is applicable in all areas of care, with the score remaining the same in each area. However, there may be significant variations in approaches to alleviating a risk condition. Parameters for risk include skin type, mobility, age, nutritional status and continence.
