Follow-up of sexual assault victims
Article Abstract:
Many rape victims do not keep their follow-up appointments after the initial medical examination. Researchers examined the records of 389 girls and women who had a complete physical examination after they were raped. Only 31% returned for a follow-up visit. Of the 122 girls and women who returned, about 43% had a physical complaint or concern related to the assault, but almost all had normal gynecological exams at that time. Many were still sexually active and did not use condoms consistently.
