Article Abstract:
Among items expected to be on the agenda at the conference of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) in 1997 are insurance cover for midwives who work in the community, and the screening of new babies. It appears that the liability of hospital trusts is limited to situations which can be foreseen and does not cover personal accidents which might not be anticipated. The director of the Scottish Board of the RCM has spoken of fears that some new babies are leaving hospital without being checked, a situation which could be rectified by midwives taking over screening.

War of independence
Article Abstract:

The client was taken to hospital for an emergency Caesarean. Lewis and Stapleton both work from the Welcome Home Birth Practice in north London.

Absence record: sick leave is a sore point for NHS managers. But instead of treating the symptons of ill health with bonuses for staying at work it would be better to treat the cause of the illness
Article Abstract:
A study of purchasers and providers commissioned by the Health Education Authority, undertaken by the Institute for Employment Studies, shows disparities in the amount of sick leave taken by nurses and other health workers. Researchers believe that the reasons of high sickness levels should be properly explored and that managers should treat the causes rather than attempting to control the cost of absence.
