Foreign body aspiration in dentistry: a review
Article Abstract:
Dentists should do whatever they can to keep their patients from aspirating dental material during dental treatments. One of two case reports illustrates that many dental filling materials do not show up on a chest X-ray. Of four dental materials examined by X-ray, only those made of polysulfide showed up clearly. Dentists should use a rubber dam whenever possible. They can also insert a piece of gauze and tell patients not to swallow objects that fall onto their tongue. Floss can also be used to tie material to a tooth.

Implant therapy I
Article Abstract:
Dental implants are metal anchors placed in the jaw to support prosthetic teeth, or to secure dental plates and other dental restorations. Implants may be screwed or pressed into the bone, and become rigid as bone grows tightly around the implant post. A failed implant is one which moves, causes continued pain, becomes infected, or breaks.

Dental device-associated problems: an analysis of FDA postmarket surveillance data
Article Abstract:
Dentists and their staff should report all adverse reactions to a dental device to the FDA MedWatch program. Between August 1, 1996 and June 30, 1999, 28,555 reports of adverse reactions to a dental device were reported to the FDA. More than 90% of the reports were adverse reactions to a dental implant.
