Thyroid nodules in the population living around Chernobyl
Article Abstract:
The incidence of benign thyroid gland nodules may not be higher among individuals living near the site of the 1986 accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In general, people who are exposed to ionizing radiation have a higher risk developing thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. Of 1,060 individuals living in the area around the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1990, 0.7% of the children and 2.9% of the adults had thyroid nodules detected by physical examination. Thyroid nodules were detected using ultrasonography in 0.5% of the children and 14.9% of the adults. The incidence of thyroid nodules among individuals living near Chernobyl was comparable to that among individuals living in uncontaminated areas. The incidence of thyroid gland nodules in Chernobyl residents still may increase in the future.
