Free-living energy expenditure assessed by two different methods in rural Gambian men
Article Abstract:
The energy expenditure (EE) is high among Gambian men during the harvesting agricultural season when physical work is intensive. Both doubly labeled water and continuous heart rate measurement methods are used to analyze the EE in rural Gambian men, with similar results. The food shortage during the period alters the calorie balance and causes weight loss. A small restriction on physical activity will result in significant energy savings for men in the developing countries such as Gambia, while an increase in physical activity is suitable for men in the industrialized countries. The average energy expenditure among rural Gambian men is 63.5 kcal/kg/day.

Energy expenditure in the elderly
Article Abstract:
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) and physical activity were considered in a study of energy expenditure in the elderly. It was shown that BMR of 70-year old mean and women exhibit a 12% decrease compared to analogous equations of people aged 18-30 years. Physical activity was only 70% during the 8th decade based on measured energy intake and BMR as against that in the third decade of life. However, the decline in physical activity and energy expenditure is not unavoidable as shown by elderly people who maintain high levels of health and physical activity.

Dose-response relationship between fat ingestion and oxidation: quantitative estimation using whole-body calorimetry and C13 isotope ratio mass spectrometry
Article Abstract:
A new study uses whole-body calorimetry and C13 isotope ratio mass spectroscopy to investigate the dose-response relationship between ingested fat and its subsequent oxidation in the short-term period following consumption of a meal.
