Evolving Trends and Treatment Advances in Pediatric Poisoning
Article Abstract:
Many advances have been made since the 1950s in the treatment of accidental poisoning in children. In 1972, there were 216 childhood deaths due to accidental poisoning but in 1997 there were only 25. Even so, more than 1 million children younger than 6 years old are accidentally poisoned in the US each year. Cosmetics and personal care products, cleaning substances, analgesics, plants, and cough and cold preparations are the most common causes of childhood poisoning. Poison control centers, child-resistant packaging and product reformulations have helped reduce the risk of accidental poisoning in children.

Timely and appropriate treatment of acute stroke: what's missing from this picture?
Article Abstract:
The prognosis of stroke can be greatly improved if patients are taken quickly to the hospital and interdisciplinary stroke teams are available to care for the patient. However, this relies on training the public to recognize the warning signs of stroke and to know the most important risk factors. In addition, physicians must be trained in the proper imaging techniques and how to interpret their results. Drugs that break up the blood clots that cause most strokes can be effective in some patients but can also increase the risk of bleeding.
