Targeting the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase in chronic myeloid leukemia
Article Abstract:
A drug called STI571 appears to be effective in treating chronic myeloid leukemia. This drug blocks the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, which is an abnormal protein produced by the chromosomal abnormality the causes this type of leukemia.

Frequency of major molecular responses to imatinib or interferon alfa plus cytarabine in newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia
Article Abstract:
The drug imatinib may be more effective than interferon alfa plus cytarabine for treating chronic myeloid leukemia, according to a study of 1,106 patients. Imatinib was much more effective in lowering blood levels of BCR-ABL, an abnormal protein that causes some of the symptoms of this type of leukemia. Patients whose blood level of BCR-ABL was lowered lived longer free of disease than other patients.

Chronic myeloid leukemia -- advances in biology and new approaches to treatment
Article Abstract:
The physiology, genetics, molecular changes, and treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) are reviewed. CML is caused by a chromosome abnormality called the Philadelphia chromosome that produces an abnormal protein. Treatments include stem cell transplantation and a drug called imatinib.
