Long-term survival after ablation of the atrioventricular node and implantation of a permanent pacemaker in patients with atrial fibrillation
Article Abstract:
Surgically destroying the atrioventricular node and implanting a permanent pacemaker appears to be an effective treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation provided they have no other heart disease. Atrial fibrillation occurs when the upper part of the heart beats very fast.

Long-term outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest after successful early defibrillation
Article Abstract:
People who have a cardiac arrest and are defibrillated quickly by police, firefighters, or paramedics have a good prognosis, according to a study of 200 patients in Olmsted County, Minnesota. The city of Rochester in Olmsted County implemented early defibrillation by police in the late 1990s. Five years after their treatment, 79% of these patients were still alive and most had a nearly normal quality of life.
