Fringe benefits
Article Abstract:
Alternative medicine embodies a holistic approach to health care. It has gained widespread support despite opposition of orthodox practitioners. Popularity may be attributable to a loss of faith in orthodox medicine and more questioning attitudes. Despite defamatory media publicity the UK Department of Health has allowed the practice of complementary therapies under general practitioner control. However, future development depends on effective organisation, regulation and evidence of efficacy.

Yes, minister!
Article Abstract:
The nursing division of the Department of Health has been active for 50 years, inspecting and monitoring nursing and handling questions of a general and professional nature. Nurses have also had assistance and advice from the division on recommendations, and when we joined the EC it negotiated with Brussels. It has also been responsible for recruiting nurses. The division is rather invisible and an unknown quantity to many nurses. Its history and achievements are discussed.

... Or an admission of failure
Article Abstract:
The legalisation of voluntary euthanasia may lead to involuntary euthanasia as legal guidelines would not prevent abuse. Opponents fear the re-emergence of Nazi extermination policies to rid society of unproductive members. Quality of life assessment is personal and protagonists fail to consider the benefits of pain management. Terminally ill patients rarely commit suicide which proves that they do not want to die.
