Conference seeks to provide basis for prostate cancer guidance message
Article Abstract:
Federal health officials are evaluating information from an international conference on prostate cancer to use as a basis to develop standard guidelines. Health care professionals may disagree on what screening and treatment options are appropriate for prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends annual screening for men beginning at age 50 with a digital rectal examination and serum prostate-specific antigen test, while several other health organizations do not recommend routine screening. Some physicians may disagree on whether to use aggressive therapy such as surgery or radiation treatment on men diagnosed with early prostate cancer. A comprehensive health message should evaluate the benefits of various strategies and discuss legal and ethical issues.
