What's at stake is more than animal rights vs. research
Article Abstract:
Research institutions should ensure humane treatment of animals as research subjects, according to speakers at a conference on animal welfare sponsored by Tufts University and a group called Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research. The research community defends the value of its findings but may fail to reveal whether animals in its care receive proper treatment. An oversight committee including at least one independent member must supervise laboratory conditions and decide whether planned experiments are necessary.

FDA vows new push on medical device regulation
Article Abstract:
The US Food and Drug Administration agreed to tighten standards and increase inspection of medical devices before they reach the market. A hearing of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations cited problems, including the failure of heart valves and complications from silicone gel breast implants. Also discussed was Optical Radiation Corp's Orcolon, a gel used in intraocular implantation of lenses. Subcommittee members claimed that the gel, which injured several patients, should not have been approved.
