From sanctuary to laboratory
Article Abstract:
Modern day medical technology focuses on the need to develop therapies and cures for diseases and conditions, without seeing through the problems and providing adequate care. People with mental illnesses were regarded as having spiritual diseases in the early 10th century, with caregiving monks providing comfort for the soul through friendship and understanding. Developments in the middle of the 19th century led physicians to treat patients and quantify results, shifting the emphasis from care to cure.
