Growth of telephone counselling highlights training needs
Article Abstract:
Telephone counselling is used in the United States to support mentally ill patients and it has increased the number of patients being treated at home from 41% to 65%. Some organisations, such as The Samaritans, offer a vitally important telephone service to people but psychiatric nurses rarely get any such training. The Samaritans and Saneline run workshops for psychiatric nurses. Cruse, AA and Alanon also run courses for their helpline staff. The nursing profession needs to consider how it can incorporate such training into its mental health courses.

Nurse prescribing in the field of community mental health nursing
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the role of mental health nurses as dependent or independent prescribers are discussed. It is argued that there is a clear case to move towards adopting the dependent prescriber function. However, there is a need for initial training.
