Functional calcium-sensing receptor expression in ovarian surface epithelial cells
Article Abstract:
Cells on the surface of ovaries may contain calcium receptors and may grow more rapidly in response to increased calcium. Calcium has been found to influence cell growth in other organs. Researchers examined cells from the surface epithelium of normal ovaries and ovarian tumors. Both normal cells and tumor cells contained calcium receptors, in significant numbers on some tumor types. When the level of calcium around ovarian cells was increased, the cells grew more rapidly. Growth of cells on the surface of ovaries may be regulated by calcium and activation of calcium receptors.

A new hypothesis about the origin of uterine fibroids based on gene expression profiling with microarrays
Article Abstract:
The microarray studies that have highlighted the role of extracellular matrix, transforming growth factor beta and collagen structure in fibroid formation, which have led to the appreciation of molecular similarities between fibroids and keloids, are discussed. The results have described a model of fibroid development based on an abnormal response to tissue repair, resulting in disordered healing and formation of an altered extracellular matrix.

Expression of brx proto-oncogene in normal ovary and in epithelial ovarian neoplasms
Article Abstract:
The brx protein occurs in healthy ovarian tissue as well as in ovarian cancer tissue. This protein was first isolated from breast cancer tissue. It is a protein that can bind to the alpha estrogen receptor and affect cell growth.
