Understanding dyspraxia
Article Abstract:
Dyspraxia, a condition which affects hand and body coordination and can cause learning difficulties, is often not recognised in young children. There is no cure for the condition, which is caused by an immaturity in brain development, but physiotherapy and occupational therapy can greatly improve the sufferer's muscle tone and coordination. Dyspraxic children should be given encouragement at home and at school, and after a time will catch up with their fellow pupils, although some supervision will always be necessary.

Gaining new understanding of tuberous sclerosis
Article Abstract:
Tuberous Sclerosis (TSC) is a genetic disease where overgrowths of abnormal tissue are found in most of the body's systems, including the brain, kidneys, heart and skin. Brain lesions are associated with epilepsy, learning disabilities and behavioural difficulties. Genetic counseling should be offered when a family member is diagnosed with TSC, which can be linked to two chromosomes. Many with TSC and learning disabilities have no method of communication, and the major behaviourial problems are associated with autism.

Mythical status: Despite its high incidence, an understanding of diabetes is clouded by a range of common myths
Article Abstract:
There are still many myths surround diabetes which can have a negative influence on the care of people with diabetes. Non-insulin dependent or type 2 diabetes is often termed mild, and patients assume this means less serious. It may often be present for some time before diagnosis, leading to increased risk of diabetic complications. Diabetic diets are often seen as restrictive, but diabetics should follow a health, balanced diet recommended for all, which is high in fibre and low in sugar and fat.
