Gastrointestinal involvement in Behcet's syndrome: a controlled study
Article Abstract:
Diarrhea and bowel disease do not seem to be common among patients with Behcet's syndrome (BS) in Turkey. Researchers searched for a diarrhea history in the records of 936 patients with BS and followed 147 current patients with BS and 78 patients with rheumatic diseases (the control group) for reports of diarrhea. They also evaluated 75 rectal tissue samples from patients with BS and control samples from 47 patients with amyloidosis and 14 patients with ulcerative colitis for evidence of bowel disease and tissue damage. Only six of the 936 patient records (0.006%) noted any diarrhea symptoms. Current patients with BS and controls reported similar frequencies of diarrhea. Only the tissue samples from patients with ulcerative colitis showed evidence of bowel disease.

Genetic anticipation in Behcet's syndrome
Article Abstract:
Behcet's syndrome in families may affect children at an earlier age than their parents. Behcet's syndrome is a genetic condition causing inflammation of the eyes and blood vessels, with ulcerations in the mouth and on the genitals. Researchers interviewed 40 Behcet's patients in 18 families affected by the syndrome. The average age when symptoms began in children was 21 years old, while their affected parents had their first symptoms at an average age of 33 years. This pattern of genetic anticipation was observed in 84% of the families with Behcet's syndrome.
