Gay men and HIV in Japan
Article Abstract:
Japanese gay men are slowly building support services for AIDS patients in Japan. The first official AIDS case was reported in 1985, but several hemophiliacs had already contracted the disease from contaminated blood. Many Japanese gay men believed AIDS was a Western disease and would not affect them. Many continued to engage in unsafe sex practices. However, most AIDS cases in Japan are among heterosexuals. Some gay activists have formed non-governmental organizations and have begun providing counseling and information about AIDS and HIV infection.

Article Abstract:
Elderly people in Japan are now provided with comprehensive healthcare under a new social security system introduced during 1995. The overall amount of expenditure on the elderly has also increased, so that more home visits are now possible. More sheltered housing, respite care beds, nursing services and home health support systems are being funded by local authorities. A better quality of nursing care is being aimed for through the provision of more education and better remuneration.

Letter from Poland
Article Abstract:
Hospital employment accounts for 57% of Poland's total of 200,000 working nurses, with 20.6% working in primary health care. Almost all nurses are fully qualified, but there is considerable variation in the way nurses are distributed and there is a lack of nursing auxiliaries. Efforts are being made to improve standards, and training courses are to be extended from two-and-a-half years to three.
