Gene expression of matrix metalloproteinases 1,3, and 9 by chondrocytes in osteoarthritic human knee articular cartilage is zone and grade specific
Article Abstract:
It appears that the regulation of metalloproteinase (MMP) 1, 3, and 9 production in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) varies by disease stage and cell location. MMPs are thought to play a role in cartilage destruction. MMP levels were compared in cartilage samples taken from six normal cadavers and 21 patients with varying OA disease stages. MMP-3 and MMP-9 were found most frequently in diseased deep cartilage sections while MMP-1 was found in diseased surface sections. MMP-3 was frequently found in advanced disease samples. MMP-9 was found in early stage disease samples. Normal samples contained none of these MMPs.

Expression of alpha and beta subunits of the integrin superfamily in articular cartilage from macroscopically normal and osteoarthritic human femoral heads
Article Abstract:
Cartilage from osteoarthritic joints shows a characteristic pattern of cellular adhesion molecules that distinguishes it from normal joint cartilage. Osteoarthritis is characterized by pain and progressive joint damage. Researchers used antibody stains to examine integrin subunits from 6 osteoarthritic femurs and 6 normal femurs. Most integrin subunits were common to both diseased and normal joints, but osteoarthritic cartilage uniquely expressed alpha 2, alpha 4 and beta 2 subunits. The alpha v subunit was more common on superficial cartilage and less common in deeper cells.

Expression of thrombospondin-1 and its receptor CD36 in human osteoarthritic cartilage
Article Abstract:
Thrombospondin-1 is produced mostly in mid-zone chondrocytes in cartilage. This protein is involved in cell-matrix interactions. Its receptor, CD36, is also found in mid-zone chondrocytes.
