Interleukin-6 in relation to other proinflammatory cytokines, chemotactic activity and neutrophil activation ion rheumatoid synovial fluid
Article Abstract:
Interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentration in joint fluid appears to be associated with the level of inflammatory activity in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. IL-6, IL-1beta, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha), and granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) are inflammation promoting factors produced by infiltrating white blood cells. Levels of these factors were measured in joint fluid samples from 30 patients with RA. A marker for the activity of polymorphonuclear white blood cells (cells that produce cartilage-degrading enzymes) was also measured. All RA patients had recent onset of their disease. Fourteen patients had a second sample drawn an average of seven months later. Relative changes in IL-6 concentrations over time correlated with relative changes in IL-8, TNFalpha, and the activity of polymorphonuclear white blood cells.

Quantitative analysis of synovial membrane inflammation: a comparison between automated and conventional microscopic measurements
Article Abstract:
The authors analyzed computerized imaging in order to measure precisely inflamed synovial membranes, the membranes which hold the intra-joint synovial fluid. They were successful to the limits of the computerized capability, but will need additional software to pursue the subject further, to include measurement of blood vessels.

Interindividual and intra-articular variation of proinflammatory cytokines in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: potential implications for treatment
Article Abstract:
Different arthritis patients may have different amounts of inflammatory cytokines in their joint spaces even if they have similar symptoms and similar degrees of inflammation. This could explain the different responses to treatment seen in different patients.
