Manufacturing consensus, marketing truth: guidelines for economic evaluation
Article Abstract:
New guidelines may not be able to forestall the inherent bias between medical researchers and business sponsors. Recommended guidelines by a recent task force from the University of Pennsylvania cannot prevent use of the monetary rewards and career opportunities offered by pharmaceutical companies. Both researcher and sponsor want certain desirable results, such as drug effectiveness. It is unclear who would oversee the enforcement of rules on ethical behavior and standard methodology in medical research. Furthermore, voluntary standards may be wishful thinking on the part of the task force. In fact, the need for guidelines and recommendations may be obsolete despite a growing body of economic analysis in the health field.
