Genetics in clinical cancer care - the future is now
Article Abstract:
Physicians must decide whether screening for BRCA1 gene mutations is cost-effective and in which populations it is best done. Mutations in this gene have been linked to breast and ovarian cancer. The mutations have been found in women with cancer who have no family history of cancer. This means that a family history of cancer is not the only criterion for testing. A 1996 study found that women with ovarian cancer and a BRCA1 mutation had a better prognosis than those who had no mutation. Consequently, the presence of a mutation can affect a woman's treatment and outcome.

Differential contributions of BRCA1 and BRCA2 to early-onset breast cancer
Article Abstract:
Mutations in the BRCA2 gene do not appear to be as strongly linked to familial breast cancer as mutations in the BRCA1 gene. These mutations have been linked to breast and ovarian cancer. Researchers tested blood samples from 73 women with early-onset breast cancer and 39 Jewish women with early-onset breast cancer for mutations in the BRCA2 gene. In both groups, about 3% of the women had a BRCA2 mutation. A specific BRCA2 mutation occurs in 1.3% of Ashkenazi Jews. BRCA2 mutations may have a weaker association with familial breast cancer than BRCA1 mutations.

Roads leading to breast cancer
Article Abstract:
The role of mutations in two genes that can lead to breast cancer are discussed. The genes are BRCA1, which has been linked to breast and ovarian cancer, and ATM, which when mutated causes ataxia-telangiectasia.
