Genital warts: their etiology and treatment
Article Abstract:
Genital warts, which are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV), are generally painless. However, some patients can experience itching or tenderness. Key risk factors for HPV infection are impaired cellular immunity, sexual activity and certain genetic host factors. Treatment can be lengthy, with frequent recurrences, as there is no routinely used antiviral treatment for HPV infection. In some cases, warts may be removed surgically under local or general anaesthetic.
