Geographic variation in the management and outcome of patients with AIDS-related Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia
Article Abstract:
Differences in mortality rates from Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in different regions of the US appear to be a result of differences in the severity of illness, insurance status and treatment plans. This was the conclusion of a study of the medical records of 1,547 AIDS patients hospitalized for PCP in Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. All differences in mortality rates disappeared when the data were adjusted for the factors listed. However, there were still significant differences in length of hospital stay.

The care of HIV-infected adults in rural areas of the United States
Article Abstract:
HIV patients who live in rural areas are not receiving appropriate treatment, perhaps because they are treated by doctors who have little experience treating HIV patients. In a study of 367 HIV patients in rural areas and 2,806 HIV patients in urban areas, those in rural areas were less likely to take highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) or drugs to prevent Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.

Lipid screening in HIV-infected veterans
Article Abstract:
Data from the veterans administration immunology case registry was examined to assess lipid screening among HIV-infected veterans who received protease inhibitors for at least six consecutive months during 1999 and 2001. It was found that six in ten patients taking protease inhibitors receive lipid screening within six months of protease inhibitors.
