Geographic variations in utilization rates in Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics
Article Abstract:
There appears to be a geographical variation in the health care received by veterans. Researchers analyzed data from the Department of Veterans Affairs covering the care of patients with eight different chronic diseases between 1991 and 1995. Geographical variation in care was greatest for patients with chronic obstructive lung disease. Patients in the Northeast had the highest rates of hospitalization and those in the West the lowest rates. Rates of outpatient clinic use were highest in patients with chronic kidney failure.

Effect of the transformation of the Veterans Affairs health care system on the quality of care
Article Abstract:
The subsequent change in the quality of preventive, acute and chronic care of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system is determined and its quality is compared with that of the Medicare fee-for-service program. The quality of care in the VA health care system substantially improved after the implementation of a systemwide reengineering and was significantly better than that in the Medicare fee-for-service program.
