Gestational diabetes alters human placental vascular responses to changes in oxygen tension
Article Abstract:
Gestational diabetes may affect the response of placental blood vessels to changes in oxygen tension, or blood levels of oxygen. Gestational diabetes is the development of glucose intolerance during pregnancy. A study examined the response to changes in oxygen tension in placental arteries and veins from women with gestational diabetes and from women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Relaxation in response to reduced levels of oxygen was higher in blood vessels from women with gestational diabetes than in those from women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Blood vessels from women with gestational diabetes contracted more in response to re-oxygenation or hydrogen peroxide than those from women with uncomplicated pregnancies.

Obstetric antecedents of intraventricular hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia in the low-birth-weight neonate
Article Abstract:
The risk of nervous system handicaps in preterm infants may be increased with premature rupture of membranes (PROM) and preterm labor. Researchers studied 745 low-birth-weight, preterm infants for neurologic compromise by performing brain ultrasound scans on days three and seven of life. Infants who were born following PROM or untreatable preterm labor were more likely to have abnormal findings on their brain scans than were infants delivered preterm because of medical indications. Infection of the placenta or amniotic fluid was associated with more frequent and more severe neurologic compromise.

A comparison opf rapid amniotic fluid markers in the prediction of microbial invasion of the uterine cavity and preterm delivery
Article Abstract:
Levels of lactate dehydrogenase in amniotic fluid may be used to indicate the presence of infection and predict preterm delivery in pregnant women experiencing preterm labor. Researchers performed transabdominal amniocentesis on 131 women in preterm labor. Sixteen women (12%) had evidence of infection in the amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid lactate dehydrogenase levels were higher in infected women, and predicted preterm delivery within 36 hours of amniocentesis. Lactate dehydrogenase tests are relatively quick and simple to perform, and are inexpensive.
