Get the balance right in diabetes
Article Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is a common condition amongst older people. Symptoms include hypertension, vascular disease and dyslipidaemia, but the condition will frequently be undiagnosed. Nursing care is aimed at relief of symptoms, promotion of a reasonable quality of life, and prevention of complications, including ketoacidosis. The first line of treatment will be control of diet. Drugs, including sulphonylureas, biguanides and insulin, will be necessary if dietary changes fail to control symptoms. Side effects of these treatments include hypoglycaemia.

Hidden dangers
Article Abstract:
The aging process contributes to the likelihood of suffering urinary dysfunction, although nurses can help reduce the incidence of infection by educating and assessing the elderly before urinary problems start. One of the main causes of urinary tract infections is the build up of urine in the bladder caused by incomplete voiding. Effective health screening should help nurses identify those most at risk of developing complications, using a variety of assessment tools, such as urinalysis and routine health checks.
