Giving GP patients advice on smoking
Article Abstract:
Most General Practitioners (GPs), health visitors and practice nurses believe tobacco advertising should be banned and taxation on cigarettes should be increased in an effort to limit smoking. All three professions are willing to talk to patients about the risks to health of smoking, but few of those professionaals surveyed believed they had been effective in helping patients to give up cigarettes. Few discussed smoking with their patients unless the patients were showing relevant symptoms. A survey of GPs, health visitors and practice nurses in Scotland is presented.

Ringside view from A&E: telephone advice by nurses is becoming more widespread in the UK
Article Abstract:
A telephone advice system for use in general practice and A&E has been developed. Initial research explored why patients call the A&E department and how this relates to advice received. This information was then used to create a decision-support software and training package, which was used by nurses from A&E departments and general practices. Models of good practice were investigated, with visits to several centres in the US where telephone triage is used. A program was developed and introduced at five sites and new methods of evaluating the project were established.
