Gliadel wafers for treatment of brain tumors
Article Abstract:
A biodegradable polymer wafer can safely deliver chemotherapy drugs to the brain in patients with glioblastoma multiforme. Surgery is often used to remove the tumor from the brain. The dime-sized wafer can be placed in the cavity left behind, where the drug carmustine can be released. The wafer eventually disintegrates. Animal studies showed that the concentration of drug in the brain is extremely high, but very little appears in the general circulation. This would spare the patient from side effects. However, the wafers are expensive and do not substantially improve survival rates.

Treatment of khat addiction

Khat is a bush cultivated in the Middle East and Africa and was found to have strong sympathomimetic effects similar of those of amphetamine. Two cases of khat addiction are discussed. The first patient was a 20-year old white female who chewed khat leaves while the second was the first patient's 26-year old ex-boyfriend who also chewed khat. They were both treated successfully with bromocriptine.
