Article Abstract:
The adverse conditions under which mental health nurses in developing countries cope could be an example to UK nurses, according to Marc Harrison, who works for the World Health Organisation in collaboration with the London Institute of Psychiatry. Global mental health issues represent an important part of nursing, with up to 50.8 million people affected by depression throughout the world. Nurses in developing countries have little choice but to use limited resources as best they can.

Depression in the UK is thought to cost the National Health Service around 8 billion pounds sterling annually, while the World Health Organization predicts that by 2010, one in three people globally will suffer from the condition. The price of the antidepressant Prozac is expected to drop significantly after its patent expires in January 2000, with a flurry of cheap generic versions anticipated to hit the market.
