Glucocorticoid therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Article Abstract:
The absence of any significant benefit from corticosteroid therapy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) indicates that COPD is not as similar to asthma as doctors have suspected. Corticosteroids are very effective in asthma, which led doctors to consider prescribing it for COPD patients. This is because the inflammatory process in both diseases was thought to be similar. However, two 1999 studies show that corticosteroids are not very effective in COPD patients. Different inflammatory agents are present in both diseases, and corticosteroids may only suppress the production of one type of inflammatory agent.

Effect of inhaled triamcinolone on the decline in pulmonary function in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Article Abstract:
Inhaled corticosteroids do not slow the progression of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but can reduce symptoms and reduce the use of health care services. This was the conclusion of a study of 1,116 people with COPD who were randomly assigned to use inhaled triamcinolone or a placebo. Unfortunately, those who used triamcinolone had lower bone density after three years of treatment.

Inhaled glucocorticoids in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Article Abstract:
Inhaled corticosteroids can improve symptoms in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but it does not slow the progression of the disease. The most effective way for patients to slow the progression of COPD is to stop smoking.
