Good news down the line
Article Abstract:
The UK government's 1997 white paper on the National Heath Service (NHS) offers many opportunities to achieve improvements in the standard of health care. The main emphasis of the document is on integrated care, focusing on partnerships and performance assessment as the means to achieve this aim. The white paper opens up a range of new opportunities for nurses, and the fact that trusts will become accountable for the quality of their health services should improve conditions for the nurses who felt they were struggling to deliver adequate nursing care with insufficient support.

Breaking the news
Article Abstract:
A study investigated midwives' attitudes to diagnosis of disability at birth and the support they provide to parents. About 60 midwives responded to a questionnaire. Results indicated midwives' awareness of the need for early counselling. However, most considered condition severity influenced the amount of counselling offered rather than parental needs. Generally midwives reflected negative public attitudes to disability. The report recommended training in counselling and attitudes to disability.

Breaking down the barriers to effective communication
Article Abstract:
Effective communication between health professionals and patients depends on a number of influencing variables such as the physical environment in which it occurs, the language used or the mood or anxieties of the interlocutors. Health professionals need to know how to listen and respond to patients in order to build a relationship and to communicate effectively rather than just giving out information which the patients may not understand or want.
