Goodbye to all that?
Article Abstract:
Changes in the UK National Health Service, in particular the anticipated demise of the over 150-year-old district general hospital (DGH), are expected to result in more opportunities for nurses. Health planning specialist, Raymond Moss, considers that the DGH is out of date because of medical and technological advances which have resulted in a change in emphasis to primary and community care from secondary care. DGHs could be replaced by federated hospitals, specialist hospitals of an institute type, or smaller cottage-type hospitals, plus more convalescent homes.

Passing the buck
Article Abstract:
The agreement aiming to redcue junior doctors' working hours to 72 per week by the end of 1994 may have adverse reactions in the nursing profession. Many nurses are concerned that they are being asked to become surrogate doctors and being coerced into taking on extra tasks normally carried out by a doctor. Despite such concerns, the nursing profession generally sees great opportunities for expanding the role of nurses, but such broadening should be patient-led, with doctors and nurses cooperating on deciding responsibilities.

Painful prejudice
Article Abstract:
The UK government's proposals to reduce eligibility for invalidity benefit threatens chronic pain support groups as volunteers fear losing benefit. Former coordinator of Self-Help In Pain, Rosalie Everatt has resigned. Public Relations Officer for the Royal College of Nursing's Work-Injured Nurses Group, Peggy Pryer may lose benefit because medical officers believe her capable of working. Both believe there is little understanding of the debilitating nature of chronic pain.
