Running to stand still
Article Abstract:
National Health Service (NHS) nursing statistics are at risk of misinterpretation, with commentators taking 1979 as the base year for employment statistics, but forgetting the reduction of the 40 hour-week to only 37.5 hours in 1980-81. However, NHS nursing staff levels have remained stable since mid-1980s. England will need an additional 5,800 nurses by 1994 and a total of 15,500 more by 2004, compared to 1989, just to keep the current ratio to the population. There continues to be great wastage and high turnover in the nursing workforce.

Pass the hat
Article Abstract:
The Audit Commission report on NHS nursing proposed that 60 million pounds sterling should be spent on further training for nurses because of difficulties in getting funding and the problems of long waiting lists. An IMS/RCN survey of more than 2,800 qualified nurses revealed that although 40% had at least one further training qualification, 48% had not been successful in gaining a place on a course, and those who had not had further training cited financing and the access to courses as the main constrictions.

Profile of a profession
Article Abstract:
The nursing profession is in a state of change, with nurses mainly older now than 15 years ago. There are also more nurses now than 10 years ago, and more are qualified. Nurses accounted for 51% of staff in the National Health Service (NHS) by 1989. There has been an over 12% increase in whole-time equivalent nurses since 1979. Of all nurses, 85% work in hospitals. Since 1974, the one-to-eight ratio of male to female nurses has remained unchanged. The Project 2000 nurse training scheme is also discussed.
