Gout: questions that still need to be answered
Article Abstract:
The genetic mechanism that causes gout to develop and the role of urate chemicals in inflammation merit special attention from researchers. Gout is caused by the build-up of uric acid in the body which can deposit crystals in the joints and cause painful swelling. Unlike most other animals, the human body does not make the enzyme for breaking down uric acid. A genetic advantage for this remains to be discovered. The inability to excrete urate appears to be an inheritable factor that predisposes humans to develop gout. Urate crystals appear to play a role in mediating inflammatory reactions, but why that is so is not known. Some people can even have urate crystals in their joints without inflammation. Better understanding of the biochemistry and metabolism of urate could improve diagnosis and care of patients with gout.

Crystal unclear
Article Abstract:
Two cases illustrate the fact that not all crystal deposits in joints are gouty deposits. In one case, the deposits turned out to be calcium pyrophosphate and in the other, crystals of cholesterol.
