Grappling with cancer - defeatism versus the reality of progress
Article Abstract:
Two researchers at the National Cancer Institute respond to an article stating that the agency has focused on treatment to the exclusion of prevention. It is difficult to prevent a disease if the risk factors are not known. If research into risk factors, epidemiology and carcinogenesis is considered, the agency spends 38% of its budget on prevention compared to 35% on treatments. Cancer is not a single disease and no one knows where the next breakthrough will come from. Reductions in mortality are not the only measure of progress. Research has improved the quality of life of many cancer survivors.

Adjuvant chemotherapy for lung cancer--a new standard of care
Article Abstract:
More research is needed to determine whether chemotherapy with cisplatin can benefit patients with lung cancer who have the tumor surgically removed. A study published in 2004 showed that cisplatin therapy after surgery can improve survival rates. This is the only study that has documented such a positive effect of postoperative chemotherapy for lung cancer patients.

Adjuvant chemotherapy for gastric cancer with S-1, an oral fluoropyrimidine
Article Abstract:
Tests to compare the efficacy of postoperative adjuvant therapy with surgery only in patients having gastric cancer were conducted. Results concluded that the 3-year average survival rate was 80.1% for patients undergone adjuvant therapy and 70.1% for surgery only patients.
